Själv fick jag på allvar upp ögonen (öronen) för hans låtar först efter hans död, tråkigt nog. Jag hade dock tidigare noterat hans namn som låtskrivare när andra gjorde hans låtar (som Bob Dylan & Willie Nelson i Pancho And Lefty, från 1993), men inte sökt mig vidare.
På våren 1997 fick jag ett blandband med Townes bästa låtar av min vän Claes Yngve och bandet öppnade en helt ny värld för mig. Jag började införskaffa hans skivor och insåg vad jag hade gått miste om. Vackra, melodiska och melankoliska låtar. Riktiga "feel good-låtar", om man är lagd åt det hållet :-) Tack, Claes!
Om man, som jag, gillar både Townes Van Zandt och Bob Dylan går det inte att komma förbi ett känt citat från Steve Earle från 1995:
“Townes Van Zandt is the best songwriter in the whole world, and I’ll stand on Bob Dylan’s coffee table in my cowboy boots and say that,”
Varpå Townes kommenterade:
“I’ve met Bob Dylan’s bodyguards, and if Steve Earle thinks he can stand on Bob Dylan’s coffee table, he’s sadly mistaken,”
